Moving a Small Load Long Distance:

Small move solutions

Moving long distance with just a few belongings may not be as time-consuming as packing up an entire house, but it still requires some careful thought and preparation. Some possible small move scenarios could be:
  • Moving to or from a college dorm
  • Moving a studio apartment or one room’s worth of furnishings
  • Moving items out of storage
  • Moving temporarily, and only taking a small amount with you
If any of these describe your situation, you may consider a moving solution like U-Pack®.

U-Pack moving options for small loads

As a DIY moving service, U-Pack offers customers the control of packing and loading their belongings, and the convenience of not having to drive — one of our professional drivers transports them cross country for you! And no matter how much you’re moving, U-Pack has two equipment options that will fit your needs. Here’s how each of them work:
ReloCube®Our metal, weatherproof container is 6’ x 7’ x 8’ and was designed with small moves in mind. And what’s great about U-Pack is that you’re only charged per CubeTM. This means you can reserve as many containers as you think you’ll need, but only pay for the ones you use.
Moving trailerAnother option is our 28’ moving trailer. Now, you may be thinking a trailer is too big to transport a small shipment economically. However, because you’re only paying for the space you take up, you can use as much or as little of the space (down to a 5 ft. minimum, which is roughly equivalent in size to one ReloCube) as you need.
You can use our online space estimator tools,or call a U-Pack representative at 800-413-4799 to help you determine how much space you need and which equipment is best for your small move.

How does U-Pack make small long-distance moves so affordable?

The concept of only paying for the space you use helps keep your long-distance move affordable. And we don’t let the empty space go to waste. If you choose to move your items in the trailer, you’ll load your belongings, and install a bulkhead when you finish. The space you don’t use is loaded with commercial goods headed in the same direction — which means lower costs for your move. And it works the same for moving containers, too. You just put a lock on the Cube, the driver loads it into the trailer, and any extra space is filled with commercial freight. See how much you can save on your small move today by getting a free online quote or calling a U-Pack consultant using the number provided above.
Note: If you’re worried about using a shared moving truck, keep in mind that your items only travel with commercial goods (such as TVs or palletized freight) and are never commingled with anyone else’s belongings or transferred. They are only loaded/unloaded by you.

More ways to save money on small moves cross country

Even though small moves aren’t likely to cost as much as bigger moves, it’s still nice to save where you can. Here are a couple of suggestions for other ways you can save money:
Terminal-terminal move. U-Pack customers can save up to $300 by doing a terminal-to-terminal move instead of a door-to-door move. With a terminal move, you bring your items to the service center closest to your home for loading, and then unload at the service center closest to your new home. For someone moving small amounts of furniture or boxes, it’s a great way to save money.
Off-peak season move. Try scheduling your move during off-peak season (October-March) when moving rates are generally less expensive.

Will U-Pack move just one piece of furniture or a few small boxes?

Yes, we will! Just because your small shipment doesn’t fill the entire moving container or the 5 ft. minimum in the trailer, doesn’t mean you can’t move your things in our equipment. You may find our rates to be cheaper than other shipping methods. If you want to check rates from additional companies, we suggest getting a quote from Mini Moves® by calling 866-437-3091.

What if my small move isn’t household goods?

For small shipments that aren’t household goods, our transportation partner ABF Freight® may be able to help.
