Organizational Tips for Moving:
There is nothing worse than feeling like you have lost control of your move. You could get in a situation where you run out of time or the movers doubled-booked you. Alternately, you could get to the new place and not remember which box had the toilet paper or how to put your entertainment center back together. Organizational tips will prove to be the most appreciated moving advice you get!
Be Choosy About Moving Services
When you pick a trusted mover that you feel confident in, not only will you have peace-of-mind going into moving day, the process will likely be much smoother. Avoid the temptation to simply choose the best price. To ensure you choose a reputable mover you need to do your homework, request a quote, and make sure they are license and insured.
Use a Clever Labeling System
A labeling system that works for one person might not be your best option, but you do need some sort of system, if you are going to stay organized. Some use a permanent market and write the name of the room on the box. If you do this, make sure you write it on at least two sides and the top. Others prefer to use colored stickers with one color dedicated solely to one room. You may decide packing labels are your best option.
Create an “Open First” Box
When you get to your new place you should not have to waste time opening a dozen different boxes just to find the coffeemaker, toilet paper, and a hammer. Create a box that has all the essentials you need, including toiletries, sheets change of clothes, plastic utensils, paper plates, dog toys, important documents, etc. If you have children then you may need a few of these survival boxes.
Downsize
Rather than move everything and deal with finding a place to put things you do not even need, use, or want, now is the time to downsize. While you are packing have large boxes handy for donating items still in good condition or trashing things that are truly garbage. Sometimes, it is hard to get rid of things you are attached to, but this is your chance to start fresh with no “junk boxes” in the basement or garage.
Use Your Camera
Take photos of electronics before you disassemble, so you know how things go back together. You should also take “before” photos of valuables, so if there is damage there is no question that it was done during the move. If there is damage make sure you get a picture of it right away.
Start Early
The best moving advice you can actually listen to is to start as early as possible. You think you have so much time and you will start next week, but pretty soon next week is actually moving day, and you still have a lot to get done. Make a list of everything you need to do, and check things off as you finish them. Do not forget about changing your address, researching vets in the new area, and transferring school records for the kids.
